A sprained ankle may be a common condition for athletes but it doesn’t mean you can’t experience it. At one point in your life, you will suffer from a sprained ankle and you will not find it comfortable at all. When it happens, it can affect your daily life and activities. When you feel some pain on your ankle, do not ignore it. There’s always a chance that you may have a broken ankle.  

The Dangers of Ankle Sprain

If you are lucky, it might just be a sprained ankle – and will go away after a few days of rest but you will never know how severe it is if you don’t visit your doctor. What if it is a serious injury consisting of a torn ligament? Remember, your feet can be complicated and is composed of 26 bones. It means, 25% of the bones in your body can be found in your feet. There is a possibility that some ligaments, tendons, and muscles are involved with the pain you are feeling. Below are the most common complications of the sprained ankle:

 

  • Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is the most common risks of ankle sprain especially if left untreated. Some incidents like stretched or torn ligaments in the feet can cause chronic pain. Other causes include fracture in your ankle bone, damage in the nerve, or a tear in the cartilage. While it is initially pain-free, delaying the treatment may cause severe pain that can even hinder your daily activities.

 

  • Ligaments permanently stretched

Sometimes if your ankle sprain is left untreated, it will heal improperly. When this happens, your ligaments will be stretched or torn permanently leaving your ankle joint weak. There is a higher chance of getting your ankle sprained again and may feel pain when moving. 

 

  • Swelling and Stiffness

Swelling in the affected area happens when the ankle sprain does not heal properly. This may result in stiffness or limited range of movement. Some individuals do not experience pain with this complication; however, the abnormal movement could limit their activity.

 

  • Early-onset of arthritis

Ankle sprain also triggers arthritis in the affected area especially if the sprain is not treated properly. The damage is already there and will lead to osteoarthritis when triggered. 

 

To rule out any possibility that there might be any damage more than just a sprained ankle, have it checked to prevent any potential long term damage.
